چکیده

The noun compounds are productive constructions in a variety of languages, but the study of this linguistic phenomenon is still a challenge, since these constructions are idiosyncratic. In this paper, we present a study of the semantics of noun compounds in English. We selected compounds formed by two nouns, noun-noun (NN) compounds, from a corpus of ten editions of the National Geographic magazine. The starting point for the analysis was the qualia structure from Pustejovsky (1995), since the roles such as constitutive, telic and agentive could be used to explain the relations between the nouns of a compound structure. In search of an approach with more possibilities of analysis, we got in contact with two cognitive studies, the linguistic templates by Ryder (1994) and the frame semantics by Fillmore (2006). The National Geographic magazine was chosen because it was also possible to find the same editions in Portuguese. Through the compilation of a parallel corpus, it was possible to identify the translation correspondent of each compound, which contributed to the analysis. Some of the most frequent semantic relations identified in the corpus are: SERVES TO, IS LOCATED IN, HAS, COMES FROM and OCCURS IN – TIME.

Translation and Hybridity in Scenes and Frames Semantics

The present study is a theoretical attempt to illustrate how Fillmore's Scenes and Frames Semantics (SFS) could be employed as a framework to portray the process of understanding and translating hybrid texts. It first reviews the origin of SFS; then it maps SFS onto Nida’s linguistic model of translation process and the Interpretive Theory of Translation; it examines in the next section, withi...

More Than Only Noun-Noun Compounds: Towards an Annotation Scheme for the Semantic Modelling of Other Noun Compound Types

The computational processing of compound semantics poses several interesting challenges. Up to now, the processing of nominal compounds with non-noun left-hand constituents (henceforth XN compounds) has not received any attention, despite the fact that these also seem to be rather productive in Germanic languages. In our research project, we aim to fill this hiatus by investigating various kind...

An Analysis of Persian‌ Compound Nouns as Constructions

In Construction Morphology (CM), a compound is treated as a construction at the word level with a systematic correlation between its form and meaning, in the sense that any change in the form is accompanied by a change in the meaning. Compound words are coined by compounding templates which are called abstract schemas in CM. These abstract constructional schemas generalize over sets of existing...

Application of Frame Semantics to Teaching Seeing and Hearing Vocabulary to Iranian EFL Learners

A term in one language rarely has an absolute synonymous meaning in the same language; besides, it rarely has an equivalent meaning in an L2. English synonyms of seeing and hearing are particularly grammatically and semantically different. Frame semantics is a good tool for discovering differences between synonymous words in L2 and differences between supposed L1 and L2 equivalents. Vocabulary ...

Noun Compound Interpretation Using Paraphrasing Verbs: Feasibility Study

The paper addresses an important challenge for the automatic processing of English written text: understanding noun compounds’ semantics. Following Downing (1977) [1], we define noun compounds as sequences of nouns acting as a single noun, e.g., bee honey, apple cake, stem cell, etc. In our view, they are best characterised by the set of all possible paraphrasing verbs that can connect the targ...
